INTRODUCTION
you can dramatically increase the functionality of final cut pro with command post which is a free extension containing hundreds of extras for controlling final cut pro including a scrolling timeline command post is essential if you use a control surface like a loop deck or a tangent panel and at the end of the video
INSTALLED IN MAC
i'll show you how to add a loop deck to command post in this video i'll show you the features that i use in command post and assist you to discover more my name's bruce and if we've met before welcome back otherwise like and subscribe and press the bell so that i can make more videos like this for you command post is free to download from a web page command post dot io and don't feel you're alone in using this extension as it's been downloaded over a hundred thousand times and once installed on your mac
CUSTOM OVERLAYS
you'll see a button in the top menu bar with options for all apps but it's not until final cut pro is active that the menu options really explode let me run through the choices from the top overlays these are additional to final cut pro's built-in overlays which are selected from the view menu button above the viewer i have a detailed video about final cut pro's overlays click the i above free custom overlays and at this point i'd like to make one thing really clear about overlays and that applies to both those built into final cut pro and those in command post overlays are only visible in the viewer and that's for reference purposes they don't export
OVERLAYS
so they'll not be seen in any saved video to use the command post overlays it's best to first make sure that the grids are enabled at the bottom of the menu once enabled then go to the top of the menu and you can manually show and hide those overlays but don't be confused with the labeling enable simply means to hide or show the grids that you have enabled at the bottom of the menu conveniently you can use the shortcut caps lock key to enable that's to show or disable you can use guides to highlight or reference certain parts of the viewer and let me show
DIFFERENT COLOURS
you what to expect when they're on view and how to use them as they can be a little bit confusing to a new user however they're easy to understand when you know how the guide looks like this with a large dot in the middle and there are five guides available and they can be turned on individually or all turned on they can have individual colors so they can be differentiated as well as brightened or darkened if no guides are turned on then the image in the viewer is movable but when a guide is turned on then the guide's movable and the image is locked in the viewer there's also a crosshair that shows at the center of the viewer it's always fixed in position at the center the grid lines could also be lightened and darkened as well as different colours and these are selected at the bottom grid overlays section next let's look at letterbox it also needs enable overlays turned on it's an overlay only so it doesn't export either and you just use it to hide part of the viewer while you're editing the scrolling timeline is a major feature of command post this is where it's enabled and disabled plus
TIMESTAMPS
you also see a highlight window to confirm that enable and disable status the scrolling timeline's not something you want to have enabled all the time but it's really useful when you're reviewing a long timeline batch export timeline will export all the clips in the timeline as separate videos save timeline export to csv is invaluable for anyone using timestamps for youtube videos so i can copy my chapter markers that are in final cut pro and add them easily to the timestamps in the descriptions in my youtube videos
SYSTEM PREFERENCES
it's brilliant save browser contents will document the contents of the browser for collaborative work and this will save a file in the same way as the timeline index did prevent mac from sleeping is important if you've asked for a process in final cut pro that will take some time say overnight for instance no harm in turning it on here but in fact this is something you should have already done if you're a regular final cut pro user this should have been set up in the max system preferences before now anyway to do it
INSERT CAMERA
now open system preferences and select energy saver select when you want the display to go to sleep and make sure prevent mac from automatically sleeping is ticked and make sure that put hard disk to sleep is unticked you should ensure that laptops are plugged in or if not consider the ramifications on battery life command post has a hud which you'd most likely use for accessing frequently used transitions titles or effects the actions can be added to one of three sets of action buttons right click on an empty button assign an action select the type of action you want to add to the button let's say a favorite title select the title you want to use right click on the button if you'd like to rename that title in the button place the playhead in the timeline and click the button the title is added and the preferences option and these are the ones that i use insert camera cards ignored
ZOOMING
whenever you insert a camera card into a computer slot on a mac final cut pro will launch the import window to allow you to import those cards contents if you're a casual user this is fine but if you're using final cut pro on a more professional basis i believe it's not the correct thing to do it's best not to import directly from a card but rather copy the complete card to your hard disk and then use final cut pro's import window to access the hd location the transfer will be faster and safer too enable timeline zooming select control key here
TRACK PAD
now in the timeline scroll on the trackpad or a magic mouse to zoom in and out it takes a bit of getting used to but it's a real time saver the mind boggles at the almost unlimited options of command post and i'd suggest that you don't add too many at once as you'll forget what's been added and what it does personally i'll leave the other options unticked finally you can add control surfaces like a loop deck you can even customize your touch bar on a macbook pro select the deck you want to add in this case we will select loop deck enable the deck and either import your settings or add your own by clicking the button and adding the action can even add a virtual touch bar at the bottom of the final cut pro window
CONCLUSION
select touch bar in the control surfaces and enable virtual touch bar you can also add your own customize actions as well as having them show for final cut pro or for all your applications as i said before the mind boggles thanks for watching i hope you got some value from this video and please let me know in the comments below if you've got areas that you struggle with in final cut i'd be very happy to produce a video to help you solve those issues please like subscribe and press the bell you.
